Horror as Brit boy, 17, dies while snorkelling on school trip | World | News

A 17-year-old student from a London school died tragically while snorkeling during a trip to Malawi, Africa. The Malawi Police Service (MPS) identified the boy as Eugene Enoch Kwon, a student at Hampton School in South West London.

While other students at the school were snorkeling in Lake Malawi at Cape Maclear in Monkey Bay on Tuesday, he disappeared below the surface. The young man was discovered underwater by divers after an extensive search in the lake.

He was taken to Monkey Bay General Hospital for emergency treatment, but unfortunately suffocated to death due to asphyxiation, according to police.

Inspector Patrick Mussa, of the Malawi Police Service’s Eastern Region Police Headquarters, confirmed Eugene’s disappearance prompted an “urgent search operation”.

He added: “After an extensive search, divers found him underwater… Eastern District police later expressed their condolences to the bereaved family, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.”

A spokesman for Hampton School, a private school for boys in Richmond upon Thames, said: “Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies are with the student’s family and loved ones at this unimaginably difficult time.

“Our focus at this time is to support the student’s family and everyone in our school community who is affected.”
