How California draws congressional districts, and why it might change in a proxy war with Trump

California’s potential redrawing of the congress zone lines can increase the power balance in the Washington DC in next year’s midterm exam elections. President Trump, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and California Gov. Due to the debate between Gavin Newsom, unusual and unexpected redistribution can occur in the coming months.

The redrawing of these maps, known as redistribution, is a esoteric practice set by many voters, but in the United States, it has a great impact on political power and politics.

Here is a casting about why a process that occurs once every ten years has attracted so much attention and potential results.

What is redistribution?

There are 435 members of the US House of Representatives, each of which is roughly represented by the same number of components. In every ten years, after the US census counts the population of the country, the allocation of congress representatives for each state may change. For example, after the 2020 census, the share of California in the congress regions was reduced for the first time in the history of the state.

After the Decennial census, it reappears the regional lines for congress and legislative regions based on population shifts, the protection of minority voters required by the Federal Voting Law Law and other factors. For most of the history of the country, such maps were created by state legislators and emerge in the back rooms full of smoke.

Many regions, California’s famous “shame lane”, such as political parties and officials were largely Gerrymandred to benefit from the Gerrymanded-Oxnard to the Monterey district line is a congress zone on the shores of California for 200 miles.

However, in recent years, political reform organizations and some elected officials, especially former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called the independent drawing of the regional lines. In 2010, state voters confirmed an overwhelming manner of a ballot measure that required to withdraw by a two -party commission in 2011 and 2021.

Why are we talking about this?

President Trump recently called on Texas deputies to re -draw the congress zones in the next year’s interim elections to increase the number of GOP members of the Assembly. The congress is closely divided and the party, which does not control the White House, traditionally loses the seats in the body two years after the presidential elections.

Trump was able to raise his agenda to close some planned parenting clinics, from deporting undocumented immigrants to the tax cuts, which provides great benefit to the rich, because the GOP White House controls the Senate and the house. But if the Democrats turn the Congress, Trump’s agenda will probably be in harmony and face the possibility of being a lame duck in the last two years.

What is Texas doing?

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called on the floods of disaster that killed more than 130 people and the legislative organ of the state to redistribute before the 2026 elections last week.

Trump and his administration urged Abbott to re -draw the congress lines of the state in the hope of getting five seats.

Abbott said that last year, the decision to include redistribution in the private session was initiated by a court decision that says that the state did not need to draw “coalition zones çıkan consisting of more than one minority community. In interviews, the governor said that the new region lines would give the politicians the opportunity to vote for the best representing themselves.

Only the Democrats in the Legislative Assembly of the Star State met with Newsom in Sacramento on Friday to discuss the consequences of mid -decade redistribution, and accused Trump of trying to equip the next year’s interim elections to power.

“They can play with a different rules and act as if we have a moral authority, and we can watch the washing of the 250-year-old experiment from the history of the nation. “We will not let this happen.”

Democratic MPs in Texas had previously escaped from the state so that the legislature did not allow the legislature to have a core like in 2021 during a war on voting rights. But with the deadly flood, this year is an unexpected possibility.

Why California is in a mixture?

Golden State’s congress regions, logical geography, common interests, minority communities and other aspects were taken by an independent commission represented.

If the state returns to the drawing of the Partisan map, the redistribution experts on both sides of the corridor acknowledge that several GOP officials in the 52 -member delegation will be vulnerable due to the placement of more democratic voters or forced to face the republican congress members. According to political statistics, there is currently nine republican members of the delegation, a number that can fall into three or four.

Strange bedmates

These dizzying developments created an agreement between competitors while dividing the old allies.

Sara Sadhwani, a member of the 2021 Reduction Commission and its supporter of Independent Map Drawing, said that California supports the efforts of changing the congress regions before the midterm.

Sadhwani, a professor of politics at Pomona College, said, “Of course, I am with the work of the Commission. In order to ensure that the color communities have an equal opportunity in the vote, we have drawn fair and competitive maps that are completely complied with the federal laws around the law of voting. “However, especially when it comes to congress, playing California fair puts the democrats in a national disadvantage.”

He said that the best policy would be the adoption of 50 states of independent reddpersion. In the meantime, however, it supports democratic efforts in California to temporarily reconstruct the regions given by shares.

“I think our democracy is patriotic to fight against things that seem to be the authoritarian rule of our democracy, Sad said Sadhwani.

Warren Buffet’s right -hand man, the late billionaire son Charles Munger Jr., has spent more than $ 12 million to support the voting compass measures that have created the independent redistribution commission and invests to weaken.

Mak It is very determined to be sure that the commission is protected, ”said Munger, who wants to speak sincerely. “This is a loss to American voters at the end of the day, Mun this is a loss to American voters, Mun said Munger.

At one point, Munger, the biggest donor of the State GOP, is actively involved in the California fight and explores other efforts to fight Gerrymandering throughout the country.

The state democratic and republican parties rarely agreed on anything, and in 2010 they accepted when they opposed the ballot. Now, if the regions are redrawn by state deputies, the Democrats, who will probably win the seats, support the red distribution of mid -ten years, while the GOP, which will probably lose the seats, should continue to be drawn by the independent commission every decade.

Gop Congress delegation said on Friday, “Governor Newsom and Sacramento’dan radical left to silence the opposition throughout the state of 20 billion dollars, while the openness to spend 200 million dollars for a special election is embarrassing,” he said. “As a delegation, we will fight with any initiative to deprive California voters from their rights with everything that is necessary to ensure that the people’s will will continue to be reflected in redistribution and choices.”

What will happen next?

If the Democrats in California are moving forward with their proposals that are connected to what they have done by Texas deputies during their special legislative sessions that started last week, they have two options:

  • State deputies can vote before the voters in a special election in November – an expensive probability. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the last state -wide special election – failed to remember Newsom in 2021 – more than $ 200 million.
  • The legislature can also vote to redress the maps, but this option will probably be more vulnerable to legal challenges.

Both scenarias are expected to be voted as an urgency item that requires 2/3 votes, but it will insulate from being the subject of a referendum put in front of the voters that will delay the action of the action.

The legislature is out of the session until mid -August.
