Edinburgh Airport evacuated after ‘reports of suspicious item’ with passengers facing disruption

Passengers experienced anxiety after the terminal building was evacuated due to a security alarm at Edinburgh Airport.
Police Scotland said an explosive ordnance disposal team was at the airport and there was a cordon with road closures.
“Edinburgh Airport was evacuated as a precaution following a report of a potentially suspicious package at around 6.50pm on Friday,” a post on the Police Scotland Edinburgh Facebook page said.
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is on standby and a cordon has been established around the airport with roads closed.”
At around 11pm, the Edinburgh Airport page said the situation was ongoing as specialist teams continued to investigate.

“Parts of the airport remain partially evacuated,” the airport said.
Investigations are ongoing and the public is advised to check ahead and contact airlines for updates.
An earlier Edinburgh Airport Facebook post said: “Due to reports of a potentially suspicious item, the airport has been evacuated whilst specialist teams investigate.
“Updates will be posted as they become available. Passengers should check with their airline for the latest information regarding their flight.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SRFS) said: “We were alerted at 8.44pm on Friday to assist our partners with an ongoing incident at Edinburgh Airport.
“Operational control activated three devices and three expert resources.”
As of 10.50pm on Friday, SFRS said crews remained there.
