How On creates its spray-on running shoes

Can running shoes be made by a spray gun? This is the idea behind Lightspray, a new production technique created by Swiss Sneaker Company.

“It allows us to fully automatically produce the top material,” Marc Maurer, former joint CEO of On, who recently left the company. He said. “A traditional product is touched by about 200 hands, which is very different here.”

The upper part of the shoe is formed as a robot. The process takes about three minutes per shoe. The final product does not have stitches or lace and is like socks.

“What we want to do is bring him millions of couples from a few thousand couples.” He said.

The company announced this month that it has opened its first Lightspray factory in Zurich, which contains four robots.
