How psychedelics are helping terminally ill patients grieve

The participants participated in two treatment sessions for several weeks. In the first, a random dose synthetic psilosibine – psychoactive component in magic mushrooms – or a placebo was given. During the second session, all participants received psilosibin.
During the eight -hour dosing process, patients lay in a bed in a soft -illuminated room with essential oil in Caritas Christi Darülaceze, Caritas Christi in Kew, east of Melbourne.
After receiving the capsules of Psilosibin, the participants put eye masks and headphones and were watched by two trained clinicians and set to music choices.

Dw We had access to a large music library that we use to intensify your experiences, Dw said Dwyer. “Some of this music was world music, some were native music, some were modern electronic things.”
The participants completed the questionnaires about their mental health before and after their treatment.

Psilosibin group went to the diagnosis of depression from moderately severe depression. The people in the placebo group experienced a small improvement in their symptoms, but they were moderately depressed.
The participants had nine psychotherapy sessions before and after the dose to help them prepare for their experience and work.
Michael Quinn attended the hearing in 2023 after two -year challenging and ultimately unsuccessful prostate cancer treatments.
Keen Denizci, who died last year, heard how Psilosybin’s professional surfector Koa Smith helped us overcome depression and trauma, and wanted to give a chance.
Quinn’s wife Pat said, “Softened his edges,” he said. “It has become more empathic and more emotional. He really improved his ability to cope with his prognosis.
“Michael had never received a psychedelic or any entertainment.
However, although he did not like the dosing process, he found incredibly useful when he was combined with psychotherapy sessions.
“He helped to run his brain again, Pat Pat said. “Death became a reality that he was in peace.”
In February 2023, Australia became the first country in the world that officially recognized Psychedelics as a drug. This followed the application of the therapeutic goods that re -planned Psilosibin and MDMA for the treatment of a psychiatrist and the treatment of PSSB.

However, Psychedelic -backed treatment is still difficult to access in the first stages and costly as medical treatment. Ross said that some clinics that offer drug -resistant depression therapy receive more than 27,000 dollars.
While 7000 people applied to be part of the hearing of ST Vincent, researchers were able to include only 35 patients.
Ross and Dwer are hopeful that private health insurers will finance treatment one day and become more affordable.
It is not known exactly why Psychedelics improves the mental health of patients. However, as Dwyer points out, no one knows why antidepressants are working.

“He changes different parts of the brain and the ways of communicating with each other,” he said. “But how people go through despair, intercourse and feel that they can embrace their lives – no one has an explanation for that.”
Royal Australia and New Zealand Psychiatrists College, Psilosibin and MDMA therapy, the base of evidence of the therapy “limited and emerged,” he said.
