King Charles officially celebrates his 77th birthday this weekend and his wife, Queen Camilla, will no doubt be by his side.
The monarch’s actual birthday was in November last year, but he will officially mark the occasion with Trooping the Color on Saturday, June 13, which has been marking the British monarch’s official birthday for more than 260 years.
Charles’ birthday celebrations come amid a difficult few years on the throne for the monarch, who takes over after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in 2022. Not only did the King have to grieve for his mother and father, but he also announced in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with cancer and more recently had to deal with his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor being stripped of his royal titles.
The one constant in King Charles’ life through all these turbulent times has been his wife, Queen Camilla, who has been a huge supporter of her husband since they married in 2005.
The Queen’s wife, 78, has been described in the past as a “calming force” for her husband, with royal biographer Christopher Wilson, who reviewed the couple in his book A Greater Love, claiming Camilla calmed Charles like no one else could.
He said: “Her presence reassures him. For all the trappings of splendor, the hills are cold and lonely, and it is easy to see the comfort it provides him.”
Camilla also helps bring some levity to royal responsibilities when appropriate, according to royal photographer Arthur Edwards, who has previously said the Queen knows how to make her husband “laugh”.
He explained: “He’s never lost his common touch. He makes her laugh. When something triggers them, you see them laughing together. They do everything with great enthusiasm.”
Body language expert Darren Stanton also previously spoke about the physical bond the couple shared, claiming it was clear how dependent King Charles was on his wife.
She said: “To this day, they still have the same passion for each other. During public events, Charles often looks around and fidgets when Camilla is not around, showing how dependent he is on Camilla. But when they are together, we see them share a genuine laugh with eye contact, which shows how emotionally like-minded they are.”
“As a young prince, we rarely saw him display a laid-back nature. Camilla brings out that side of him where he can be himself, let go, and enjoy his time as King.”
The Royal Family will gather for one of the biggest events on the royal calendar when the Trooping of the Colors begins this Saturday (June 13). Some members of the royal family will join the parade before the family then heads to Buckingham Palace, where they will step out onto the balcony to greet curious onlookers.
So far, the King and Queen, as well as the Prince and Princess of Wales, are expected to appear with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are expected to attend, as well as Princess Anne and Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.
The lineup for the Joining of Colors balcony appearance has remained the same since 2023, when the King first appeared as monarch.
