The Golden Globes are a major milestone of the film awards season and will take place less than two weeks before the Oscar nominees are announced (January 22).
The Globes give out more awards than most other ceremonies because they separate film categories by drama, musical or comedy.
Timothée Chalamet, Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessie Buckley and Michael B Jordan have acting nominations this year.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of this year’s event.

The ceremony starts at 01:00 GMT (Monday morning) and usually lasts three to four hours.
It is broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Which movies were nominated?
Getty ImagesOne war after another, The film, about a former revolutionary whose daughter is kidnapped, is at the top of the list this year as well, after becoming one of the most acclaimed films of 2025.
Its competition includes: Emotional Value, A Norwegian drama about two sisters who reconnect with their estranged father, a film director who plans for his return after the death of their mother.
sinners, A vampire horror drama set in 1930s Mississippi was one of the first Oscar nominees to become a box office success shortly after last year’s Academy Awards.
Elsewhere, the big-screen adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel hamnet It explores the family tragedy that many believe prompted William Shakespeare to write one of his most famous plays.
A new adaptation Frankenstein It gives a more emotional perspective to Mary Shelley’s novel about a mad scientist and his creation. Bad: For Good It concludes the origin story of Elphaba, the evil witch of the West.
kidnapping drama It Was Just an Accident The film, which is one of the best films of this year’s award season and was awarded the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of a man who wants to take revenge on the former police officer who tortured him in prison.
And Marty Supreme It is about a table tennis player in 1950s New York trying to stay afloat financially while making a name for himself as an athlete.
Other nominated films include conspiracy theory drama bugoniakorean black comedy No Other ChoiceBrazilian political thriller Secret agent and animated musical smash Kpop Demon Hunters.
Which are the leading actors?
Getty Imagesbox office giants Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another) will go head-to-head in a particularly heated race for best musical or comedy actor. Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) is a possible dark horse.
In the category of best drama actor, Michael B Jordan (Sinners) has a strong chance, but the Globes’ trend internationally in recent years suggests we shouldn’t count out the Cannes winner WagnerMoura (Secret agent).
The best musical or comedy actor field is run by experienced professionals such as: Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) and kate hudson (Song Sung Blue), there is strong competition from relative newcomers Chase Infiniti (War After Another).
It’s much easier to guess the best drama actress. Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) thinks he is ahead of even his strongest rivals Renate Reinsve (Emotional Value).
Supporting actor and actress nominees include: Amy Madigan (Weaponry), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn And Teyana Taylor (all Battles One After Another).
Who hosts the Golden Globes?
Golden GlobeUS comedian Nikki Glaser is returning to her hosting duties after her impressive performance at the ceremony, which lasted at least a year.
She delivered an opening monologue that would rival Globe bigwigs Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, setting the stage ablaze for A-list celebrities.
hosting the Golden Globes, Glaser later said: “It was without a doubt the most fun I’ve had in my career.”
But speaking to the BBC’s Regan Morris earlier this week, Glaser said he was often intimidated by the “star power” in the room, adding: “I blur my eyes when I’m on stage, I’ll do that a lot at night.”
Why is Adolescence still nominated?
Getty ImagesIt’s been nearly a year since most people watched Netflix’s hit movie about a teenage boy accused of stabbing his classmate, and the series has already triumphed at the Emmys, Critics’ Choice, and National Television Awards.
But since most other awards events continue more or less into the calendar year, Adolescence is only recognized at events like the Golden Globes.
Expect to see even more of Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty at upcoming events such as the Actor Awards (formerly SAG) in March and the Bafta TV Awards, which don’t take place until May.
Which prizes have already been distributed?
Getty ImagesTwo special awards recognizing lifetime achievement are usually handed out on the night, but this year they were presented at the opening ceremony of Globes Eve last week.
Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker He received the Carol Burnett award for outstanding contributions to television. Dame Helen Mirren It received the film equivalent of the Cecil B DeMille award.
During his acceptance speech, Dame Helen said the award “was described to me as a career recognition”.
“But,” he continued, “I would rather think of it as a life lived, a life survived, a life enjoyed, a life sweated, and a life that goes on, I hope.”
In his speech, Parker thanked Friends, colleagues and family who had supported him throughout his decades-long show business career were telling them: “You have been an integral part of an incredible life, that’s a reward, thank you.”
Why are the Golden Globe awards important?
Getty ImagesAn actor or film that wins the Golden Globe won’t automatically go on to win the Oscar, but it may help solidify its chances for a nomination.
As one of the first ceremonies of awards season, the Globes can provide a significant momentum boost as a victory or well-received acceptance speech will encourage more Academy voters to watch a particular film.
stars like Sebastian Stan, Demi Moore And fernanda torres all went on to secure Oscar nominations after winning the Globe last January (though Stan’s was for a different film).
And movies like this Flow And I’m Still Here They got their award campaigns off to a strong start thanks to their early victory at the Golden Globes, and both went on to win awards in the animation and international categories, respectively, at the Oscars.
Affectionately referred to as the “drunken uncle” of awards season, the Globes are a much less formal affair than the Oscars.
You can expect the celebs to be in a relaxed mood and ready to have fun with their speeches — as long as they can stand to be teased by Nikki Glaser first.
