President Donald Trump said Friday that he would issue an executive order “shortly” laying out the “legal reasons” for national voter ID requirements.

Trump said in posts on Truth Social late Friday that he wants voter ID laws implemented for the 2026 midterm elections, but legislation mandating them appears unlikely to stall in Congress.

“Democrats refuse to vote for Voter ID or Citizenship. The reason is simple: They want to continue rigging elections,” Trump said. Posted on Truth Social.

“This is not what our Founders wanted. I have delved into the depths of Legal Arguments on this issue that have not yet been expressed or examined, and will present an irrefutable argument in the very near future. There will be Voter ID for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” continued.
