2.5-magnitude earthquake strikes in Columbia

A minor earthquake measuring approximately 2.5 magnitude struck East Columbia late Monday afternoon, according to officials. US Geological Survey’website.
The source of the earthquake, which occurred at 5:17 p.m. according to USGS coordinates, was Hopewell Park in Rustling Leaf, located just south of Elkhorn Lake in the Owen Brown neighborhood, north of the Snowden River Parkway. The depth of the earthquake was reported to be about 5 miles, making it a fairly shallow shaker.
But residents of Columbia were alarmed. The tremor in the Clemens Crossing neighborhood of Hickory Ridge in West Columbia, about 2 1/2 miles to the west, caused many neighbors to take to the streets to see what was happening. But nothing seemed wrong, according to one resident.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 80 people had submitted reports to the USGS website confirming that they felt the shaking.
Howard County Fire and EMS said on social media platform X that no serious damage or injuries were reported as of 6 p.m.
