How Visakhapatnam zoo keeps animals cool as temperatures rise

A light veil of humidity hangs in the air as water fountains come to life in the enclosures of the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP). Under the canopy of trees and hills in the Eastern Ghats, khus mats drip steadily, thatched roofs soften the summer glare, and animals retreat to cooler corners of their enclosures. Spread across 625 acres between forested hills and the Bay of Bengal, the zoo adapts to the annual rhythm of summer management.
As temperatures rise outside the park’s gates, the interior landscaping is carefully landscaped. Water, shade, nutrition, and routine work together to keep animals within a narrow comfort band. Here, every enclosure carries a plan; Each type requires a different response.
