Man arrested and streets evacuated after suspicious items reported in Margate

A man was arrested in Margate and residents were evacuated four ways after police received reports of a property containing suspicious items.

The military unit armed with explosive devices was deployed after Kent Police received a call at around 4pm on Wednesday raising concerns about items found at a flat in Rosedale Road.

Kent Police said that one person was arrested and detained in connection with the incidents.

Houses on Glencoe Road, Wharfedale Road and Malham Drive were also evacuated and Thanet District Council is now managing residents’ welfare at Hartsdown Leisure Centre.

While the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team affiliated with the Ministry of Defense established a security strip at the scene, Kent Fire and Rescue teams were also present at the scene.

Images on social media show that many police officers were at the scene and the roads were taped. Many residents appear to be in groups and waiting behind the tape.

Police made a statement at around 21.30 on Wednesday.

Thanet councilor Jack Packman told affected residents to seek help. “If you have family or friends you can stay with for a short time, we encourage you to do so.

“However, if this is not possible, Thanet District Council has established an evacuation point at Hartsdown Leisure Center where support and assistance is available.”

Mr Packman said police were still investigating the incident and there was no cause for concern at this stage.
