November supermoon rising next week to be biggest full Moon of 2025

The Moon does not circle the Earth in a perfect circle, but has a more egg-shaped, elliptical orbit. Therefore, it is not always the same distance from the Earth.

The Moon is approximately 220,000 miles from Earth at its closest point (or perigee), while it is approximately 250,000 miles away at its farthest point (or apogee).

If the Moon is full at its closest point to Earth or within 90% of perigee, it may be called a ‘supermoon’.

The term was first used by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 to describe full moons that appear noticeably larger and brighter when they coincide with perigee.

November’s Beaver Moon will be the closest full moon to Earth this year, so it will be the brightest full moon and appear to be the largest.
