King Charles formally removes Andrew’s prince title after Epstein scandal
The King has officially stripped his disgraced brother Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of both his HRH title and the title of prince.
Charles officially implemented the changes dramatically announced a week earlier by issuing a Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, published by the Crown Office in The Gazette, the United Kingdom’s official public record.
The entry published on Wednesday read: “The KING is pleased to declare that from Letters Patent Under the Great Seal of the Realm, dated 3 November 2025, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer have the right to retain and use the style, title or attribution of ‘His Royal Highness’ and the nominal dignity of ‘Prince’.”
Another entry confirmed Andrew’s removal from the Peerage List as Duke of York, as previously announced.
It read: “The KING is pleased to direct the Secretary of State, under the Royal Signals Manual dated 30 October 2025, to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the List of Nobility with immediate effect.”
Charles’ decision to remove Andrew from the monarchy and strip him of his right to be a prince as well as his right to a dukedom comes in the wake of growing controversy over his links to pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew’s relationship with Epstein put a strain on the royal family. Emails from 2011 resurfaced in October showing Andrew keeping in touch with Epstein months after he claimed their friendship had ended.
The crackdown was followed by a posthumous memoir by Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre, which repeated allegations that she was forced to have sex with Andrew on three separate occasions in her youth. He vehemently denied the allegations.
Unsealed court documents show Andrew saying it “would be nice to meet in person” months after Epstein was released from prison on charges of solicitation of prostitution and solicitation of a minor for prostitution.
In an email dated April 15, 2010, following Epstein’s suggestion that Andrew meet American banker Jes Staley, Andrew said he would “stop by” in New York later in the year.
The two were photographed together in December 2010 at a meeting in New York, which Andrew claimed in a 2019 Newsnight interview would break up their friendship.
Andrew later wrote to Epstein after a photo of him with Virginia Giuffre was published in 2011: “I’m worried about you too! Don’t worry about me! Looks like we’re in this together and we’ll have to get through it. Otherwise stay in close contact and we’ll play some more soon!!!!”
He said during the 2019 interview that he “didn’t remember anything about meeting this lady.” He “categorically” denied having sex with Virginia Giuffre between 2001 and 2002, when she was 17.
Andrew later said he would retire from public life, and in 2022 it was announced that Andrew would not use “Your Royal Highness” in any official capacity. He denied any wrongdoing and made a financial settlement to Ms. Giuffre to settle the civil suit.
Ms. Giuffre died by suicide in April 2025. Her experiences with Epstein and Maxwell were detailed in her memoir, published posthumously in October. She also detailed alleged interactions with Andrew.
