Hurricane Melissa poses extreme flood threat, says US National Hurricane Center – The Economic Times Video

Hurricane Melissa has become a Category 4 hurricane, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday, October 26, adding that maximum sustained winds increased to 220 km/h. The NHC said the hurricane was about 280 miles (450 km) from Guantanamo, Cuba. The NHC said devastating floods and landslides were likely in parts of southern Hispaniola and Jamaica. “The story here is really about the rain,” Jamie Rhome, deputy director of NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, said at a briefing on Sunday, Oct. 26. “If you’re watching from Jamaica, conditions are going to deteriorate rapidly throughout the day today. Wherever you are, you need to be there and be prepared to ride it out for a few days,” he added. The Miami-based forecaster added that Melissa is expected to become a major hurricane when it makes landfall in Jamaica Monday night or Tuesday morning and southeastern Cuba late Tuesday.
