Why Trump is wrong to call justices an ’embarrassment’ after tariff ruling

They are “stupid”!

They are “lap dogs!”

They are “unfaithful”!

“Shame on them”, “shame on their families”!

They bow to the pressure of the “weak guns”!

And they’re not just “radical” Democrats, they’re also “RINOs”!

I have almost never seen Donald Trump as angry as he was after the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs as illegal.

It was barely controlled anger as he read from his notes. He was dripping with disdain when he kept going off script.

TRUMP ANNOUNCED THE ‘NEW HERO’ SUPREME COURT JUSTICE AFTER TARIFF DECISION

What was surprising about Republicans in Name Only was that the 6-3 decision was supported by two appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Comey Barrett.

They joined the majority opinion from Chief Justice John Roberts, a consensus builder the president has struggled with in the past.

Gorsuch and Barrett did exactly what we asked the justices to do; They weighed the evidence and used their best judgment in interpreting the Constitution.

So why does Trump, who prefers to refer to Brett Kavanaugh’s opponent, attack two conservatives in such personal terms? Are they being disloyal to the legal process by saying they have no authority to unilaterally impose tariffs on countries around the world or on himself personally?

By the way, who are the poor anonymous guys and how do they wield so much influence?

Supreme Court

During the Q&A, Trump was asked why he doesn’t just work with Congress.

“I don’t have to,” he said.

But that was the main point of the high court decision; Trump needed congressional approval before imposing drastic tariffs.

Many conservatives who are not big fans of tariffs have publicly expressed relief that the Supreme Court has taken this blunt force weapon out of Trump’s hands.

The president had a long winning streak in this court, which, among other things, expanded his immunity for almost all actions in office. I guess they weren’t lapdogs back then. But Friday’s decision made clear that even a conservative court has its limits.

Don’t take my word for it on this one. Wall Street Journal’s conservative editorial page He said Trump owed an apology “to the judges he denigrated” and “to the institution itself.” “He will no doubt make a proposal, but his outcry in response to the tariff defeat in court was probably the worst moment of his presidency.”

from the left, Maureen Dowd said The New York Times wrote that Trump had a “hissy fit” after “the court, which had been obedient to the megalomania in the White House, suddenly found its backbone.”

There are even reports that he cursed the courts that day.

Trump said he would use a different law to impose a 10 percent global tariff, and over the weekend he raised that rate to 15 percent. This may only last five months. But more importantly, it’s a modest tax compared to the draconian taxes the president has imposed or threatened to impose on various countries, allied or not, as part of a trade war or simply because he had a tough meeting with a foreign leader.

TRUMP INCREASED GLOBAL TARIFF TO 15%

J.D. Vance accused the high court of “lawlessness.” I’m sorry, Mr. Vice President, it’s okay to tear up the decision, but the court’s job is to interpret the law in a way that applies to the other two branches.

In an online attack aimed at Gorsuch and Barrett, Trump wrote: “No matter how good our case is, they almost always vote against Republicans and never against themselves.” But Barrett voted with the majority to grant blanket immunity to presidents but said the court’s decision in this case went too far.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, “Despite misplaced praise from Democrats, misinformed media outlets, and people draining our industrial base, the court did not rule against President Trump’s tariffs. Six justices ruled that IEEPA mandates cannot be used to generate even $1 in revenue.” (IEEPA is a 1977 emergency law.)

Well… the court ruled against the tariffs. The media’s court reporters aren’t exactly “misinformed” either; they are experts, even lawyers in some cases. Lutnick’s own boss also blames Republicans.

At the press conference, Trump fielded a somewhat stupid question from a reporter: Are justices still invited to Tuesday’s State of the Union event?

“Barely,” Trump said. What is this, secondary school? Won’t they get a seat at the cool kid table? The president said he didn’t care if they came or not, and neither did anyone else.

Trump was on target when he said this would take two years to be resolved in court, but it will likely take much longer than that. Are the companies that paid the $175 billion tariff now entitled to a refund? Who knows?

We are looking at the possibility of an economic crisis. At the very least, it’s a blow to Trump’s agenda. He doesn’t like being told he can’t do something. Trump, for all his nonsense, had warned that a loss in the Supreme Court would be devastating, and now we’re going to find out what that looks like.

Maybe he wants to get back to talking about UFOs?
