‘I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace,’ says Trump amid Greenland threats – Europe live | World news

Morning opening: ‘I no longer feel the obligation to think only about peace’

US President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration have repeatedly reiterated their determination to seize control of Greenland overnight. It comes just hours after European leaders began frantically coordinating their response to a U.S. move to impose tariffs on the plan’s most vocal opponents.

Trump said in an overnight social media post:

“For 20 years, NATO has been telling Denmark that you must remove the Russian threat from Greenland. Unfortunately, Denmark couldn’t do anything about it. Now is the time and it will be done!!! President Donald J. Trump”

US treasury secretary Scott Bessent took a similar line, telling broadcaster NBC: “The Europeans reflect weakness, the United States reflects strength.”

“The President believes Improved security is not possible without Greenland becoming part of the United Stateshe said.

Escalating further, he appeared to stake Greenland’s future on continued US support for Ukraine.

He said:

“European leaders will come to their senses and realize that they must be under the security umbrella of the United States. What will happen to Ukraine if the USA withdraws its support? Everything would collapse.

The issue of Greenland’s future will continue to occupy the agenda today. As Europeans coordinate their steps ahead of an extraordinary EU summit expected to be held on Thursday this week. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to attend. A special emergency press conference was held this morning.

Later today, Danish and Greenlandic ministers will also meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He is one of Trump’s closest European partners.

But despite being an extremely diplomatic (or sycophantic, if you ask his critics) and glass-half-full kind of person, The Dutchman failed to strike a particularly positive tone after his meeting with Trump on Sunday night. “He spoke with @POTUS about the security situation in Greenland and the Arctic. We will continue to work on that and I look forward to seeing him in Davos later this week,” he said in a brief speech.

And yet…

Perhaps the most explosive revelation this morning came from another direction. first reported by PBS correspondent Nick Schifrinand was later widely reported in Europe.

During the weekend, Trump sent a letter to Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre and said: “Considering that the country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize For stopping 8 Wars PLUS, “I no longer feel an obligation to think only about Peace.”

(Note: Norway does not decide the Nobel Peace Prize. It is an independent committee headquartered in Oslo, not controlled by the Norwegian state.)

He added magnanimously: “Although [thinking about peace] will always dominate but [I] “We can now think about what is good and appropriate for the United States.”

Trump then doubled down on his threat to Denmark over Greenland. says:

Denmark cannot protect these lands from Russia or China and why do they have ‘property rights’? There is no written document, just that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats that landed there too. I have done more for NATO than anyone else since its founding, and now NATO needs to do something for the United States. The Earth is not safe unless we have Complete and Complete Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT”

in a fun way, Prime Minister of Norway VG confirmed the authenticity of the letter sent to the newspaper, He said this was in response to an earlier message he and Finnish President Alexander Stubb sent to Trump.

Today is going to be a crazy day, so get ready. I will bring the latest developments here.
