When I got through the first months of the pandemic by working here luxury retailI thought I was safe. I even spent some money renovating my home’s deck and outdoor area. I was stunned when my position was eliminated in September 2020.
My career goal has always been: climb the corporate ladder. I had been doing this for the last 20 years and was proud of the role I took on. It bothered me that this was taken away.
That weekend my parents told me they always thought I would be good at real estate. I was never interested in starting my own business. I didn’t want to be real because real estate agent I thought the market was saturated. Still, I suspected my parents were right: to want be good at it.
The month I was laid off, my uncle Eddie died. We knew you would, but almost six years later it still makes me cry. My uncle, my father’s younger brother, was a man of few words.
His only passion was his Jaguar, which his female friends loved very much. For the most part, he lived simply and survived. He had no children of his own, but he cared very much about leaving something to future generations, my two siblings and me.
While he was in the hospital, we had an unspoken agreement that when he died, I would sell his house and spend the money on my business. A few months later, her house became my first sale. Between income and other inheritances, he left me approximately $80,000.
After selling real estate for about a year, I knew I wanted to start my own business. I had learned enough about the industry to see how I could differentiate myself in a busy market by offering high-touch services that would help customers buy back their time. I registered my business in February 2022.
Using Eddie’s legacy, I was able to quickly hire a customer logistics manager. Having him allowed the brand to start on the right foot. I wouldn’t have grown this quickly without Eddie’s legacy.
Mine feelings about inheritance I didn’t change how I used money: I was still pretty realistic about finances. But morally and emotionally, I thanked Eddie every day, and I still do.
