I won gold at RHS Chelsea – these are my favourite begonias | UK | News

Begonias may be a summer favorite, but gardeners must choose carefully as not all varieties do the same job.
Some are grown for their abundance of colorful flowers, while others attract attention with their striking foliage, and choosing the right one can make all the difference.
Speaking to the Express from his stand in the Grand Pavilion, he said some begonias can even survive the winter outdoors in more temperate parts of Britain.
“Some varieties are almost hardy and can be grown outside. For foliage, Begonia ‘Benitochiba’ it’s so beautiful Begonia ‘Sugar Queen’“It’s a plant that has beautiful pink leaves and looks really nice outside,” she said.
“In London and the South East they are pretty much hardy so you can get away with them there too, but further north they need a bit more shelter.”
For gardeners, he suggested choosing a tuber variety that emphasizes flowers rather than leaves and feeding regularly.
“Tuber ones are best for flowers. They do well in a hanging basket or tubs for summer flowers. Choose a color you like and make sure you feed them well,” she said.
“One of the most beautiful Begonia sutherlandii. It has lovely little orange flowers, very delicate little leaves and is a species originally from South Africa.
“A very nice variety.”
