Storm Goretti to dump 20cm snow on Midlands as UK hits -12C | Weather | News

The meteorologist warned of up to 20 centimeters more snowfall in large parts of the country in the coming days. The latest severe low pressure system, Nicknamed Storm GorettiIt is expected to cause travel disruptions, power outages and isolation of rural communities on Thursday and Friday.

Hundreds of schools had to close due to adverse weather conditions; In Marham, Norfolk, temperatures dropped to -12.5C, colder than Iceland, while the Scottish Highlands experienced temperatures as low as -11C. The Midlands is predicted to be hardest hit by the intense cold, with the Met Office issuing at least one weather warning every day until Saturday.

Areas such as Worcestershire and Warwickshire are expected to accumulate up to eight inches of snow by midday on Friday, according to the Met Office.

Rural communities in these counties and neighboring areas may face isolation. Parts of south-west Wales, including the South Wales Valleys, may face similar challenges; The heaviest snowfall from the next wave can be expected early Thursday night.

The storm is expected to move eastward overnight.

Snowfall is expected to become more widespread early Friday morning. Although the heaviest snowfall will be concentrated in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, areas further north, including parts of North Yorkshire, will also experience light dusting.

However, Storm Goretti will move eastwards in full force and hit the East Midlands and eastern England during Friday’s rush hour.

Northamptonshire, for example, could see around six inches of snowfall by Friday afternoon.

Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly explained: “A further flurry of snow is expected to fall eastwards across central and northern Scotland today. Yellow warnings will remain in place until 7pm this evening.”

“Elsewhere, showers of snow will mix with rain and sleet and it will be another very cold day as winds strengthen. Overnight the cold air will return and temperatures will drop below freezing again. This means there is a further risk of ice overnight and new yellow weather warnings for ice will cover the majority of the UK by Wednesday morning.”

Cold Arctic conditions continue to prevail across Britain.

Although actual temperatures will be slightly milder, the wind chill factor will make it feel as bitter as -12C on Friday.

However, earlier this week actual temperatures dropped to -12.5C in Marham, Norfolk.
