An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Missouri was praised by the Department of Homeland Security after stopping to provide life-saving medical care to a driver injured in a serious crash, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Tuesday.
DHS praised ICE officer Curtland Sawyer for helping save the driver’s life after witnessing the collision on his way home.
According to DHS, ICE’s St. Sawyer, who was assigned to the St. Louis sub-office, was driving home on July 11 when he saw a vehicle crash into a tractor trailer outside Festus, Missouri.

Sawyer rushed to the scene and provided life-saving medical care, including applying a tourniquet to the driver’s arm to stop life-threatening bleeding, DHS said.
Sawyer remained with the injured driver until emergency medical technicians arrived to provide further treatment, DHS said.
“ICE law enforcement officer Curtland Sawyer immediately provided life-saving medical care to a motorist involved in a serious collision with a tractor trailer in Missouri. Officer Sawyer is a hero,” DHS Deputy Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement.

“Our officers are the best of the best,” he continued. “When they see someone in need, they don’t hesitate to step in to help. If you see an ICE law enforcement officer, thank them for their service to our nation.”
Sawyer’s actions are the latest in a series of rescues that DHS has highlighted in recent weeks.
Last month, an ICE officer jumped into a Florida swimming pool to save a 6-year-old boy before administering life-saving CPR, according to DHS.
