IIT Bombay researchers use microbes to unlock nature’s hidden rules

In a newly shedding light on one of the most amazing questions of biology, researchers in IIT-BOMBay showed that when the nutrients are presented, fine differences could push the germs throughout the evolutionary ways.

The findings were published in two articles. NPJ Systems Biology and Applications And BMC Ecology and Evolution.

Experiments led by Supreet Saini focused on microbes Escherichia coliA common intestinal bacteria and Saccharomyces cerevisiaeA type of yeast commonly used in cooking.

Researchers have designed to work to test what germs eat and how they were offered. They used chemically associated sugar glycose and galactose, but they packed them differently. While a group of germs took a simple mixture of two, the others were fed with lactose or melibiye with complex sugars made of the same components but bound differently.

Prof. Saini said, ık We chose chemically associated candies. Our goal was to see whether germs care about how the food was served, ”he said.

More than 300 generations, germs developed in a striking way along different ways. Inside E. coliOne group of growth faster, the other produced more biomass. Maya populations were similarly divergent. Genetic studies have shown that several mutations contribute to these adaptations.

“We did not expect these fine differences to create completely different adaptable ways,” he said. “Findings show which mutations of a cell react to a nutrients and which ways can affect which ways of evolution can take.”

When the researchers transfer these advanced population E. coli And Maya watched a pattern of growth in new sugar environments. This phenomenon, called Pleiotropic response, refers to the side effects of adaptation in one environment that affect behavior.

Pavithra Venkataraman, a former doctoral student in IIT-Bombay, reminds me that evolution is both flexible and limited, ”he said. E. coli work. “In the same environments, the result was unpredictable, it showed a possible flexibility in evolution. However, the pleiotropic side effects of this evolution in new environments were surprisingly consistent.

Inferences go far beyond academic interest. Researchers can carefully direct microbial evolution to create faster or more efficient strains by carefully changing their food combinations, and open doors for applications in food and beverages. The study also proposes a strategy to combat antibiotic resistance by restricting the existing evolutionary ways of pathogens.

Like a science fiction story with more than one possible end, the evolution begins from the same starting point, but can emerge in infinite ways.
