Illegal immigrant indicted for murder, faces death penalty in Florida

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for an illegal alien who re-entered the United States after being deported and allegedly killed a woman in Florida before fleeing to a sanctuary city.
Shahidul Islam, 44, a Bangladeshi national, was indicted Wednesday by a Lake County, Florida grand jury on a charge of premeditated first-degree murder in the May 2, 2025, shooting death of his sister-in-law, Monica Islam.
Hours after Monica Islam disappeared on May 2, she was found shot in the head on the side of the road, according to State’s Attorney Bill Gladson of the Fifth Judicial Circuit.
The woman was last seen walking towards Shahidul Islam’s car, and Gladson said authorities discovered she had made several “suspicious” searches online the morning of the murder.

The search warrant uncovered bloodstains in Shahidul Islam’s car that matched Monica Islam’s DNA, as well as a bullet lodged in the passenger door and a broken passenger window.
Gladson said that after the murder, Shahidul Islam rented a car and drove to New York.
He was later captured through a joint effort by local, state and federal law enforcement.

Shahidul Islam was returned to Lake County after being tried and convicted for his illegal entry into the United States. He is currently being held without bail at the Lake County Detention Facility.
Gladson’s office announced Wednesday that he is seeking the death penalty, citing the serious nature of the crime and its impact on the victim’s family.
“No family should have to endure the pain of a senseless and horrific act of violence like this,” Florida Comptroller Blaise Ingoglia said in a statement. he said. “Shaheedul Islam entered our country illegally after being deported, committed this heinous crime, and then fled to a holy city.”

Ingoglia added that Florida “will continue to stand firm against violent crime, sanctuary cities, and illegal immigration” and will “never apologize for putting the safety of law-abiding families first.”

Gladson said that “no investigation can bring back the life that was taken” but that his office plans to “pursue justice on their behalf and hold this criminal accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
