A barrister has warned households they could be fined £500 over a common Wi-Fi error.
It’s a common problem for multiple Wi-Fi networks to overlap and interfere with each other, especially if you live close to your neighbors, as most people do. In fact, you can try connecting to several neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks at any given time.
But a legal expert has warned people against the temptation to access other Wi-Fi networks, even if your property has a good signal.
Experts say one of the most overlooked crimes is using someone else’s Wi-Fi connection without permission, even if the network is not open or secure.
Simarjot Singh Judge, lawyer at law firm Judge LawHe says people are often stunned to learn that this behavior has already led to lawsuits in the UK.
“There was a real case where someone was taken to court and fined £500 for using their neighbour’s Wi-Fi without permission,” he said. “This surprises a lot of people because it’s something that most people assume is harmless.”
Using another person’s internet connection without their consent may amount to obtaining a service dishonestly and is a criminal offense under UK law.
His Honor says the biggest problem is not deliberate inaccuracy but misunderstanding of where the law draws the line. “Most people aren’t trying to break the law,” he said. “But ignorance does not protect you when a complaint is made or the situation escalates.
“In a world where everything is instantly connected and shared, everyday actions can have real legal consequences. Taking a little time to check what is allowed can save people from serious stress and serious legal problems.”
If you find yourself struggling with network interference from your neighbors’ Wi-Fi, you may want to fiddle with your router’s settings.
Try tuning the channels to a different band; Your neighbors are unlikely to stray from their default router settings, so by adjusting yours you can avoid some of the noise that could hinder your speed.
InLink Systems explains: “Routers use one of 11 channels in the 2.4GHz band. If your neighbors have a Wi-Fi router on the same channel within range of your router or Wi-Fi gateway, this can cause interference. Co-channel interference occurs when multiple networks use the same channel, while adjacent channel interference occurs when networks use overlapping neighboring channels.”
