IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai, Raigad After Heavy Rain

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert for Mumbai and Raigad district, valid for the next three hours, due to heavy rainfall since Saturday night.

In Mumbai, more than 250-300 mm of rainfall was recorded in several parts of the city in the last 23 hours.

IMD predicts moderate to heavy rains in these regions.

As Mumbai welcomed the monsoon with heavy rains in the last few days, the balcony of a dilapidated building in Navi Mumbai’s Belapur village collapsed due to continuous heavy rainfall.

It was learned that the building was largely destroyed.

Waterlogging was witnessed in many parts of Thane city.

Meanwhile, Western Railway Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Vineet Abhishek said that operations are continuing despite the Western Railway suburban network recording staggering rainfall levels of over 250 mm since Saturday night, while some areas witnessed rainfall in the range of 150 to 200 cm.

“It was also raining heavily since last night, especially today in the early hours of the morning and especially at high tide, and we saw rainfall exceeding almost 250 mm in some pockets of the Western Railway Suburban section, while in some sections we saw rainfall in the range of 150 to 200 mm. There was heavy rainfall in our section, but this did not affect our train operations, local train operations and long distance train operations, it continued uninterrupted without any problems.” he said.

A car was crushed after a huge tree was uprooted in Vikrant Circle area in Ghatkopar in the early hours of the morning.

A local person said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was informed about the tree but no action was taken.

An eyewitness told ANI that after the complaint was registered, no official arrived and no action was taken.

He stated that there was no loss of life following the incident.

“About eight days ago, our manager complained about this issue, an official from BMC came and registered the complaint, but no one came. Four vehicles were damaged. There was no loss of life.”
