College student, 18, drowns during Duke of Edinburgh expedition in Wales

An 18-year-old university student has died while on a Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) expedition in Wales.

Emergency services were called to the River Wye in Glasbury, Powys, on Tuesday evening after reports the teenager had gone into the water and could not be located.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed his body was found following a search involving the mountain rescue team and the fire brigade.

A DofE spokesman later confirmed the student was on a trip as part of a DofE tour when he died.

He said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a teenager has drowned during a DofE expedition in Powys, Wales.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and everyone involved.

“We will do our best to support them during this difficult time.

“DofE is liaising closely with the teenager’s school and relevant authorities to understand how this tragic incident occurred.

“We offer our full support”

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police previously said: “A multi-agency operation was conducted at the River Wye in Glasbury this evening following a report that an 18-year-old male had entered the water and could not be located.

“Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, Mountain Rescue and the National Police Air Service have searched the area since the report was made at 6.30pm.

“Unfortunately, the body of a man has been found. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.

“Emergency services remain in the area and ask members of the public to stay away while investigations continue.”
