India, Bhutan to strengthen cooperation in power sector

In the official statement made on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, it was stated that India and Bhutan will strengthen cooperation in the energy sector.
A delegation from the neighboring country met Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal in the national capital, the statement said.
Ministry of Energy, Bhutan Lyonpo said that Gem Tshering, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, met with Mr. Lal to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector.
“During the talks, both sides discussed commercial optimization of power generation from Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project (1020 MW),” the statement said.
The ministry said emphasis was also placed on early commissioning of Punatsangchhu-I Hydropower Project (1200 MW).
The discussion also discussed the way forward for the Sankosh Hydroelectric Project.
India and Bhutan also discussed transmission infrastructure planning until 2040, for which detailed consultations are ongoing.
The meeting also discussed the need to facilitate approval for energy planning, especially during lean months in Bhutan.
