Websites, apps down in Amazon cloud unit outage

20 October 2025 20:34 | News

Amazon’s cloud services unit AWS was affected by an outage that caused connectivity issues for many companies around the world and disrupted services for many popular websites and apps, such as Fortnite and Snapchat.

“We can confirm that error rates and delays have increased for multiple AWS Services in the US-East-1 Region,” AWS said in an update on its status page.

Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and trading app Robinhood attributed the outages to AWS.

“The surprise has subsided now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We are working to resolve it,” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said in a post on social media platform X.

AWS provides on-demand computing power, data storage and other digital services to companies, governments and individuals.

Outages in its servers can cause outages on websites and platforms that rely on cloud infrastructure. AWS competes with cloud services from Google and Microsoft.

AWS and Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.

According to Downdetector, Amazon’s shopping site PrimeVideo and Alexa were all experiencing issues.

The outage tracking website said Epic Games-owned Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale and Clash of Clans were among the gaming sites to shut down, while Paypal’s Venmo and Chime were some of the financial platforms facing problems.

Uber’s rival Lyft’s app was also closed to thousands of users in the US.

Meredith Whittaker, President of messaging app Signal, also confirmed to X that their platform was also affected by the AWS outage.
