India slams Trump over ‘hellhole’ social media post

India has harshly criticized US President Donald Trump for a post that called the South Asian country a “hellhole” and branded the remark as “uninformed, inappropriate and in bad taste”.

The US president shared a transcript of remarks by conservative podcaster Michael Savage in a controversial post on Truth Social

“A baby here instantly becomes a citizen, and then they bring the whole family over from China or India or some other hell on the planet. You don’t have to go far to see it. English is no longer spoken here. There is almost no loyalty to this country among the incoming immigrant class today, which wasn’t always the case,” Trump wrote in the letter.

When these words triggered anger in India, Trump made a statement.

In a statement released by the US Embassy in New Delhi, Trump said India was a “great country” and called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “very good friend”.

“The president said, ‘India is a great country, I have a great friend at the top of it,'” a US embassy spokesman said.

The MEA spokesperson added that the remarks do not reflect the India-US relationship, which is based on mutual respect and common interests.
