India Slips to Sixth Spot in Global Economy Rankings: IMF

According to the latest estimates of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India has slipped to the sixth largest economy in the world by 2025; The weak rupee offset strong domestic growth and delayed its ambition to become the third largest economy.
India’s economy is estimated to be $3.92 trillion in 2025, putting it behind the United Kingdom ($4 trillion) and Japan ($4.44 trillion). The United States continues to be at the top with a GDP of $30.8 trillion, followed by China with $19.6 trillion and Germany with $4.7 trillion.
IMF data shows the rupee weakening from around 84.6 per US dollar in 2024 to around 88.5 in 2025. This depreciation diluted the impact of nominal growth of about 9 percent in rupee terms, making India’s earnings in dollar terms look more modest.
Despite strong domestic economic growth, currency fluctuations have affected India’s relative position in global GDP rankings.
