According to a statement from the Department of Commerce on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer wrapped up his two-day visit to New Delhi by holding multiple meetings with Commerce Secretary Piyush Goyal in which key elements of the interim trade agreement as well as the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) were reviewed.

While both sides noted that their negotiating teams have “made significant progress” on the agreements in recent months, the statement did not specify any deadline for either agreement. The BTA was announced in February 2025 and was scheduled to be completed in the fall of that year. The framework of the interim agreement was signed in February this year and the agreement was supposed to be completed by April-May 2026.

“The visit was an important step in ongoing efforts to advance a balanced, mutually beneficial India-US BTA and finalize an interim agreement in line with the joint statement dated February 7, 2026,” the statement said.

He added that Mr. Greer and Mr. Goyal had undertaken a “comprehensive review” of key BTA elements, including improved market access, digital trade, supply chain flexibility, reduction of non-tariff barriers and expanded cooperation in strategic sectors.

“Both sides noted significant progress in negotiations with the teams in recent months and welcomed the momentum gained from successive technical and ministerial engagements,” the statement said. “Discussions focused on ways to conclude an interim agreement as an important milestone towards a comprehensive BTA.”

During the meetings, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a deal that is balanced, commercially meaningful and provides “tangible benefits” for businesses, farmers, workers and consumers in both countries, it said.

“Recognizing the growing importance of the India-US economic partnership amid evolving global trade dynamics, both sides reiterated their shared goals of expanding bilateral trade, promoting innovation and building resilient, reliable supply chains,” the statement said.
