Indian entrepreneur explains how Warren Buffett shaped his financial habits: ‘I don’t have single rupee of black money’

Muthukrishnan Dhandapani, a Chennai-based mutual fund distributor, certified financial planner and financial influencer, has spoken at length on social media about maintaining transparent financial records and building wealth through legal means. The post quickly went viral and sparked a wide range of reactions.
Inspired by legendary investor Warren Buffett, Dhandapani has talked for decades about filing detailed income tax returns and avoiding unaccounted money altogether.
In the lengthy post, she recalled discovering Buffett while spending time reading in libraries during her stay in the United States. The businessman said Buffett’s disciplined financial habits and success through legal investing deeply influenced his approach to money and taxation.
Dhandapani explained that he began maintaining full financial transparency by submitting detailed documents such as cash flow statements, balance sheets and profit and loss accounts, as well as tax returns, from the early days of earnings. He also claimed to have kept records for each fiscal year, including bank transactions and supporting documents.
“I do not have even a single rupee of black money,” he wrote, adding that he believed “It is 100% possible to acquire significant wealth through legal means.”
‘Role model is important’
The entrepreneur called Buffett one of the biggest inspirations in his life and emphasized the importance of choosing the right role models.
“Warren Buffett says it’s very important who you have as a role model in life. I have several role models in life, and he’s probably the first to join the list,” he wrote.
He also noted that integrity and financial discipline are often taken for granted, especially in India, where he believes transparent financial practices are sometimes seen as unusual.
Social media users praise message of honesty and discipline
The post sparked widespread discussion online, with many users sharing their own experiences with keeping financial records and paying taxes honestly.
One user wrote: “My dad kept all his pay stubs and tax returns from the moment he started earning, and I keep them to this day.
These days the tax department has digitized everything, including ITR copies!”
Another commented: “The fact that you start filing detailed returns even when your wealth is just a few lakhs is the mindset that separates the truly rich from others. Disciplined before consequences. 🙏
‘Role model is important’ – this sentence is very accurate. You chose Buffett. And now you have become someone for many of us without knowing it.
A third user emphasized the peace of mind that financial transparency brings. “I don’t know if declaring your full income will make you rich, but it will definitely help you sleep better.
And that’s what I prefer the most. “I have not accepted even a single rupee of cash income in the last 3.5 years of doing business.”
Another entrepreneur shared a similar sentiment, writing: “That’s great, sir. As a founder, I learned the same lesson, but much later than you. Keeping every record clean feels like extra work at the moment. But the peace of mind it gives you later is worth more than the money itself. You never have to remember a lie or fear a knock on the door. Honesty is the cheapest insurance there is.”
