India’s Gig Internet Workforce to Hit 21 Million by 2030: Report
New Delhi: The workforce servicing services originating from mobile applications is expected to triple in India to 17-21 million by 2030 from around 6 million currently, Redseer Strategy Consultants said on Thursday.
Redseer Strategy Consultants’ report titled ‘Gig Internet Workforce in India: Bridges to ~20 Million Livelihoods’ found that gig internet platforms in delivery, ride-hailing and home services have gone beyond being a source of flexible work.
“India’s monthly active gig internet workforce is expected to grow from 6 million today to 17-21 million by 2030. 54 percent of workers surveyed were not in paid employment before joining gig platforms,” the report said.
According to the report, more than 30 percent of gig workers projected by 2030 will be joining the workforce for the first time.
The report found that full-time workers earn 2.5 times more monthly net income than comparable formal and informal occupations.
“Almost 70 percent of employees surveyed believe that the job platform experience improves future earning opportunities. More than 90 percent of monthly active gig workers choose part-time participation, highlighting the industry’s flexibility,” the report said.
Increasing women’s participation represents one of the biggest opportunities for the next phase of growth, the report said.
Redseer Strategy Consultants Partner Kushal Bhatnagar said the importance of India’s fast internet workforce lies in the choices it creates.
“This offers a practical way for people to enter the workforce, increase household income, navigate transitions or work towards long-term goals without being constrained by traditional employment structures,” he said.
