India’s GST collections rise 6.2% to ₹1.93 lakh crore in January

India’s goods and services tax (GST) collections reached ₹1,93,384 crore in January, up 6.2% from the same month last year, supported by strong domestic activity and healthy growth in import revenues, the government said on Sunday.Gross GST collections were ₹ 1,82,094 crore in January 2025.

Year-to-date (April-January 2025-26) gross collections have increased to ₹18,43,423 crore, registering a strong annual growth of 8.3%.

Net GST revenue for January was ₹ 1,70,719 crore, an increase of 7.6% compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date net income rose 6.8% year-on-year to ₹15,95,752 crore.

Refunds saw mixed trends; total refunds were recorded at ₹22,665 crore in January, a slight decline of 3.1% year-on-year. Domestic refunds decreased by 7.1% to ₹13,119 billion, while export refunds increased by 2.9% to ₹9,546 billion.


Domestic GST collections showed steady growth, rising 4.8% year-on-year to ₹1,41,132 crore. Imported GST collections remained strong; gross import revenue was ₹ 52,253 crore, up 10.1% from January 2025.
The ongoing compensation cut as a transitional measure fell sharply to ₹5,768 crore from ₹13,009 crore last year, a drop of 55.6%. Post-resolution GST revenues at the state level showed a mixed picture. While industrialized countries made solid gains, smaller regions experienced contractions:

Positive growth: Haryana (27%), Maharashtra (15%), Gujarat (13%), Himachal Pradesh (18%), Punjab (12%)

Medium growth: Tamil Nadu (5%), Karnataka (7%), Uttar Pradesh (2%), Delhi (3%), West Bengal (1%)

Decreases: Madhya Pradesh (-15%), Jharkhand (-6%), Odisha (-10%), Chhattisgarh (-23%), Ladakh (-30%), Lakshadweep (-30%)

The Union Territories showed varied performance with Chandigarh showing an increase of 15%, Puducherry showing an increase of 11% and Lakshadweep experiencing a sharp decline of 30%.
