USA women’s ice hockey team avoids Trump politics after Canada rout at Winter Olympics
Forward Alex Carpenter, another member of the U.S. team, said he respects people’s right to take positions when asked about American athletes speaking in response to Trump.
“I’m definitely aware of what my fellow athletes are saying and, you know, I respect everyone’s right to free speech and, you know, I think that says a lot about them as people and Team USA as a whole group.”
The USA team showed a dominant performance in containing Canada, remaining in control from the beginning of the grudge match, which did not reach the expected level due to the superiority of the Americans. Harvey scored one of the USA’s five goals and had three assists, while Hannah Bilka scored two goals.
This dominance was worrisome for the Olympics, given that Canada won the gold medal in the last Olympics. The only caveat was that the Canadiens were without their leading player and captain, Marie-Philip Poulin, who suffered a lower-body injury in their 5-1 win over the Czechs on Monday night. Poulin is one of the best players in the history of women’s soccer, and Canada was lacking offensively without their captain.

But the two teams are still favored to meet in the gold medal game, a measure of the clear lead the talented U.S. team has opened up on the field.
