The indigenous advanced stealth frigate ‘Taragiri’, equipped with state-of-the-art combat capabilities, has been delivered to the Navy, officials said on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

‘Taragiri’ (Yard 12653), the fourth ship of the Nilgiri class (Project 17A) and the third ship built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL), was handed over to the Navy at MDL, Mumbai, on 28 November, marking a significant milestone in achieving self-reliance in warship design and construction.

The Navy said this state-of-the-art frigate reflects a “quantum leap” in naval design, stealth, firepower, automation and survivability and is the symbol of ‘aatmanirbharta’ in warship construction.

Project 17A frigates are versatile, multi-mission platforms designed to address current and future maritime challenges.

The powerful weapons and sensor suite consists of the BrahMos missile, MFSTAR (radar) and MRSAM (medium-range surface-to-air missile) complex, and a combination of 30mm and 12.7mm close-in weapon systems, as well as rockets and torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare, the Navy said.

‘Taragiri’ became the fourth P17A ship delivered to the Indian Navy in the last 11 months.

The Navy spokesman said experience gained from the construction of the first two P17A ships enabled the construction time of ‘Taragiri’ to be compressed to 81 months compared to 93 months taken for the first of the class (‘Nilgiri’).

The remaining three ships of Project 17A (one at MDL and two at GRSE – Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd) are planned to be delivered in phases by August 2026, the Navy said.

‘Taragiri’ is the reincarnation of the erstwhile INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that was part of the Indian Navy fleet from 16 May 1980 to 27 June 2013 and served the country gloriously for 33 years.

The P17A frigates, designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and inspected by the Warship Inspection Team (Mumbai), reflect a “generational leap” in indigenous ship design, stealth, survivability and combat capability, the Navy said.

Drawing on the philosophy of integrated construction, the ship was built and delivered within the stipulated timelines.

P17A ships are equipped with an advanced suite of weapons and sensors compared to the P17 (Shivalik) class.

“These vessels are configured with Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion facilities consisting of a diesel engine and a gas turbine driving the Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) on each shaft and a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS),” he said.

The delivery of ‘Taragiri’ showcases the country’s design, shipbuilding and engineering prowess and reflects the Navy’s relentless focus on ‘aatmanirbharta’ in both ship design and shipbuilding.

It was stated that more than 200 SMEs took part in the project, which has 75 percent localization content, and that approximately 4,000 personnel were directly employed and more than 10,000 personnel were indirectly employed.
