Prince Harry is a man who is angry about a few things right now.
But whatever you think of him, or whatever his reasons for feeling victimized, he did himself and his country proud by proving that he was on the right side of history by speaking out against an arrogant and ignorant tyrant.
There have been very few occasions when the royal family has stepped into the political arena, but veteran Harry’s heartbreaking response Donald Trump‘s stupidity over Afghanistan proves where his loyalties really lie.
The US President angered current and former soldiers by incorrectly stating that NATO troops were “just off the front line.”
His false underestimation of the role played by British troops in Afghanistan was an insult to the 457 heroes who died in the war and those left with life-changing injuries.
And for a furious Harry, who served two tours of duty as an Apache helicopter co-pilot and gunner in Afghanistan, mostly on the front lines, that was enough to make him see red.
Even though he did not name Trump, his target was clear. And in just six simple words, he put the obtuse president in his place, saying “thousands of lives have been changed forever.”
His seismic statement was: “In 2001, NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history. This meant that every Allied country had to stand with the United States in Afghanistan for our common security. Allies answered the call.
“I served there. I made lifelong friends there. I lost friends there too. 457 service personnel were killed in the UK alone.
“Thousands of lives were changed forever. Mothers and fathers buried their sons and daughters. Children were left fatherless. Families bore the price.
“These sacrifices deserve to be talked about honestly and respectfully, as we all remain united and committed to diplomacy and the defense of peace.”
Make no mistake, his words resonated and deeply damaged Trump, whose distorted worldview increasingly seeks to rewrite history.
By tarnishing the memories of the 1,160 non-US coalition troops killed in Afghanistan and the thousands more injured, Trump forgot one thing.
Those who came to his country’s aid after the September 11 attacks were the very countries he was trying to destabilize with his cruel fetish for Greenland.
A quarter of a century later, his casual and arrogant dismissal of their service belittles their sacrifice, belittles his office, and makes a mockery of his title as commander in chief.
Harry’s words clearly had an impact.
Yesterday, the blustering Trump was forced to backtrack and made a disparaging remark on the Truth Social platform, saying the Brits were “among the best of all warriors” and finally acknowledging the dead and the many “severely injured”.
“The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America!” he wrote.
“This is a bond so strong that it can never be broken,” the president added.
“With tremendous heart and soul, the UK Army is second to none (except for the USA!). We love you all and always will!”
The fact that Trump, a know-it-all braggart, constantly embarrass himself for his lack of knowledge doesn’t seem to matter to him or the dogs wagging around him. This encourages him.
As if to highlight willful ignorance coming from the White House, he posted a provocative AI-generated image of Trump riding a penguin through a snowy mountain landscape.
The X read “Embrace the penguin” and showed the flightless seabird holding an American flag (with the Greenland flag in the distance).
This was a provocative and immature action aimed at NATO, in the midst of an ongoing (for now) verbal tussle over Danish territory. He was also actually wrong.
From where? Because there are no penguins in Greenland, the Arctic or the Northern Hemisphere.
But mistakes — literal or otherwise — don’t seem to matter much to reality-distorting Trump, so the White House doubled down on the toe-curling error when it was pointed out in terms the president could understand that the Oscar-winning children’s movie Happy Feet was set in Antarctica, in the Southern Hemisphere.
The White House’s response? “The penguin is not interested in the thoughts of those who cannot understand.”
This is the problem the world increasingly faces: It is impossible to reason with fools because they will drag you down to their level… and then beat you with experience.
