An injured wild elephant was found at Anakkulam in Malayattoor forest division. According to environmentalist MN Jayachandran, the male elephant was seen with a deep wound on its trunk in the Anakkulam river in the last two days. The river is a frequent watering place for wild elephants.
“He has a deep wound and cannot eat. The elephant was seen standing in the river on Friday; it occasionally moves towards the nearby forest before returning to the water. If the forest department does not provide treatment, this could lead to the death of the animal,” Mr. Jayachandran said.
He added that local people also spotted the injured elephant in the area. “We have already alerted the forest department officials and hope they will locate the animal to provide medical care,” he said.
A senior Forest department official confirmed that the elephant is currently camped near the Malayattoor reserve and Mankulam forest division border. “Both Mankulam and Malayattoor staff are working to track the animal. It was spotted in the Anakkulam river on Friday before retreating to the forest. As per our observations, the elephant’s condition is stable now. If necessary, the department will take necessary steps to provide treatment,” the official said.
