NEW DELHI: Pakistan Army, which has become extremely distrustful when it comes to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is planning a series of actions against him and his party PTI. Since his ouster and subsequent arrest, the army has tried to meet him many times but Imran Khan has refused. Officials say the military may try to talk to Imran Khan once again and if he continues his defiance they are likely to ban his party. The army may even tell the government to try Imran Khan on treason charges.

The military is trying to portray that Imran Khan is a security risk and that he is capable of revealing secrets about the country. Since he is the Prime Minister, he has knowledge about Pakistan’s secret assets. The army is trying to prove that Imran Khan is mentally unstable and therefore national secrets cannot be trusted.

During many discussions, Imran Khan was even offered a safe exit from Pakistan. He can settle abroad and be granted political asylum. However, the former Prime Minister did not accept any of these offers, leaving the army extremely disappointed.

The army is also unhappy with Imran Khan’s support for the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) and the Afghan Taliban. Under his leadership, relations with the TTP and the Afghan Taliban were normal. Statistics show that terrorist attacks have increased by almost 500 percent with the resurgence of TTP. The army blames Imran Khan’s PTI government for facilitating the return and settlement of TTP militants.

However, experts warn that prosecuting Khan for treason or shutting down his party will not be a solution. Imran Khan is receiving huge support from the public. Many within the establishment associate Washington’s anger towards Pakistan with Imran Khan. The organization says that the US is upset with Pakistan because Imran Khan accused Washington of planning his removal from the post of Prime Minister. Today, relations between the United States and Pakistan have improved significantly.

He is also accused of briefly derailing relations with Beijing after commenting on the involvement of some corrupt Chinese in the China Economic Corridor Project (CPEC).
