Inside the drama engulfing House Of The Dragon as fans vow to boycott season three and critics reveal show made them ‘physically sick’

House Of The Dragon, which fascinated its fans with its first two films, is very close to returning to our screens.
But as expectations for what comes next grow, the series, which is a prequel to HBO’s smash hit Game Of Thrones, is already getting caught up in the drama even before the third season debuts on June 21.
Some fans have vowed to boycott future episodes, while critics previewing what’s to come have revealed the fantasy series has made them ‘physically sick’.
Key actors such as Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans and Fabien Frankel will return.
The fantasy series first hit screens in 2022 and returns with its eight-episode third season. It will premiere on HBO Max, with other episodes airing weekly until the finale on August 10.
But this week a critic said there was a scene in one of the first four episodes that made her ‘sick’ and caused the entire audience to ‘gasp in unison’.
House of The Dragon, in which Matt Smith plays the role of Prince Daemon Targaryen, is very close to returning to our screens after fascinating fans with the first two films.
But as expectations for what comes next grow, before the third season debuts on June 21, drama is already engulfing the show, starring Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen and Olivia Cooke as Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower.
Critic Sabrina Barr wrote: Metro: ‘House Of The Dragon has never been afraid to push boundaries; The opening episode of season one featured a tragic birth scene that was truly one of the scariest scenes I’ve ever seen on television.
‘Daemon Targaryen in the second season [Matt Smith] Had sex with his own mother in a strange Harrenhal-induced dream sequence [Harrenhal is an infamous castle in Westeros]. But this last vomit-inducing moment might take the biscuit.’
Many have already said they will boycott the upcoming season after being severely disappointed with the second series ending in August 2024.
The 70-minute finale, titled The Queen Who Ever Was, did not offer the view that many Game Of Thrones fans expected from the season finales.
While it had its share of surprising moments, including Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) bold gamble and the shockingly unclaimed Iron Throne, many were left disappointed.
‘WHERE IS THE OTHER PART OF THE EPISODE????’ @ashx_s0ul tweeted with the caption ‘Sobbing in Valyrian’ along with a picture of a cat.
The first season ended with Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) son Lucerys Velaryon’s shocking deal with Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), setting the stage for the coming ‘war’.
Still, fans didn’t get much in the way of actual battle action in the second season, which is the main reason why many felt underwhelmed.
And now, as a result, some fans are planning to boycott the next series.
The cast includes Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham.
New cast members include Annie Shapiro, Tom Cullen, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Joplin Sibtain, Barry Sloane and James Norton.

Many have already said they will boycott the upcoming season after being severely disappointed with the second series ending in August 2024.
Previously, fans shared their excitement when three trailers were released for an extremely violent season in which fighting soldiers are slaughtered and burned alive.
Writing in YouTube’s comments section, one fan wrote: ‘We’re talking now.’
Another added: ‘This season is full of darkness and horror.’
A third shared: ‘Boy Daemon is finally getting the Action he deserves!!’
A fourth chimed in: ‘This drama is so dark, so tragic and epic… pure gold.’
A fifth agreed: ‘This looks better than season 2. We hope it works.’
This isn’t the first controversy the series has been involved in.
In 2022, an administrator of the program was forced to clarify comments that the program ‘depicted sexual violence’.
“I would like to clarify that we do not depict sexual violence on the show,” said writer and executive producer Sara Hess. Vanity Fair In that case. ‘We take an incident off-screen and instead show the aftermath and the impact it has on the victim and the perpetrator’s mother.
“I think what our show does, and what I’m proud of, is that we choose to focus on the violence against women that is inherent in the patriarchal system,” she told the publication.
“There are many ‘historical’ or history-based series that romanticize strong men in sexual/marital relationships with women who, although ‘willing’, are not actually old enough to consent,” Sara continued.
We bring this to the screen and don’t shy away from the fact that in the first half of the series, our female leads are manipulated and forced to do the bidding of adult men.
‘This is not necessarily done by people we would describe as rapists or abusers, but mostly by generally well-intentioned men who fail to see that what they are doing is traumatic and oppressive because the system they live in has normalized it. It’s less obvious than rape, but it’s just as insidious, albeit in a different way.’
The first season ended with Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy, pictured) son Lucerys Velaryon’s shocking agreement with Aemond Targaryen, setting the stage for the ‘war’ to come.
In 2022, Steve Toussaint responded to racist trolls who claimed he did not match author George RR Martin’s portrayal of the character Lord Corlys Velaryo in the novel on which the series is based.
This comes after House Of The Dragon director Miguel Sapochnik discussed how sexual violence against women will be shown in the series.
In an interview with Hollywood ReporterSapochnik said the production was ‘holding back’ on how much sex was revealed, but still provided a glimpse into how ordinary sex is a part of life.
The Hollywood Reporter’s report stated, “Violence against women is still a part of the world.”
Sapochnik said they approached the issue “carefully, thoughtfully and thoughtfully” [we] Don’t be shy about it. If anything happens, we will shed light in this direction. You cannot ignore the violence committed by men against women at that time. This should not be belittled nor glorified.’
When the blockbuster fantasy drama Game Of Thrones first aired 15 years ago, it became almost instantly known for its violent bloodlust and frequent gratuitous nudity.
From the first episodes of George R.R. Martin’s eight-season epic there were sensational sex scenes, tales of rape and incest, and even gory depictions of child murder.
This was not the only controversy at the time.
In 2022, black actor Steve Toussaint, who plays Lord Corlys Velaryo, responded to racist trolls who claimed that he did not match author George R.R. Martin’s portrayal of the character in the novel on which the series is based, stating that people were okay with “flying dragons” but had a problem with “rich black men”.
Created by Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal, the story is adapted from a chapter of Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood.
In the HBO Max series, Toussaint played the leader of House Velayron, one of House Targaryen’s closest allies and the richest house in Westeros, and a good friend of King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Constantine).
Later, Toussaint responded to the bad reviews, explaining that people ‘of his colour’ were a big part of history.
“Many people base their ideas about the history of this country on a few movies and materials made in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s that have nothing to do with the facts.” he said. Men’s Health In that case.
‘Historically, people of my color and your color, we didn’t just get here in the 1970s or 1960s.
‘Once upon a time, the ruler of his country, ‘Caesar’, was an African man. There are street names in this country that even at that time meant that there were people who looked like us, but for some reason it was very difficult for people to swallow this.
‘They are happy that the dragon is flying. They’re happy with their white hair and violet eyes, but a rich black man? ‘Beyond this pallor.’
Toussaint reminded people that the series wasn’t intended to be exactly like the book, and admitted that he hadn’t even read the book before playing Lord Corly.
‘George Martin sent us all signed copies of the book. I was going to read it, then I thought no. “What I have to represent is what they wrote in the script,” he explained.
‘They will take liberties with this for dramatic purposes. So I didn’t want to read his comment or know what happened to my character.’
The third season of House Of The Dragon will premiere on June 21 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT on HBO and HBO Max.
In the UK, the first episode will air on 22 June at 02:00. You can stream it on Sky Atlantic, HBO Max or NOW TV.
