Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta urged the Central Government to take a proactive approach in integrating mental health awareness and support into early childhood care. This way, no child will be left behind at the beginning of their learning journey.
The MP, who raised the issue of mental health and early learning difficulties among children in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377 on March 30, cited data showing that one in seven adolescents faces mental health problems and nearly 8% of children suffer from diagnosable mental disorders. Approximately 85% of brain development occurs before the age of six; This makes early childhood the most critical stage in shaping cognitive and emotional development. For a child, this period lays the foundation for language, behavior and learning abilities. Timely support during these years can prevent long-term challenges and improve outcomes across the education system.
