Two US service personnel were killed while defending against ballistic missile and drone attacks launched by Iran in Jordan, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM). The military command added that one service member was missing following yesterday’s multi-gun attack, while four other personnel required medical evacuation to Jordanian hospitals but were later discharged.
The deaths mark the first time US soldiers have been killed by direct Iranian fire since the first phase of the conflict. Jordan, which hosts US troops and aircraft, has been repeatedly targeted by Iran as it retaliates for an expanding American airstrike campaign.
Other personnel evaluated for minor injuries returned to duty, CENTCOM said.
The following statements were made in the statement: “On July 17, two US soldiers were killed during the operation in Jordan during the defense of US Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces against Iran’s ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle attacks. One military personnel was also missing…
“Out of respect for families, CENTCOM will retain additional information, including the identities of deceased combatants, until 24 hours after next of kin are notified.”
