Senate GOP nears historic milestone with nearly 100 Trump picks

Senate Republicans moved one step closer to the date Wednesday after clearing another procedural hurdle on their way to confirming nearly 100 of President Donald Trump’s nominees.

As part of their mad dash from Washington ahead of the upcoming holiday recess, Senate Republicans touted 97 slices of Trump’s picks. Successful party-line voting puts the GOP one step away from confirming its crop of candidates.

The final confirmation vote is expected to take place on Thursday unless a deal is reached with Senate Democrats to speed up the process.

And if that vote is successful, as it is expected to be, Senate Republicans will have confirmed more Trump picks than any other president in a year.

The current candidate package would put Trump at 415 total candidates confirmed in the first year of his second term, surpassing the total of 323 in his first term. He also trails former President Joe Biden, who had 365 during the same period by the end of his first year in office.

Senate Republicans have quickly confirmed hundreds of Trump’s picks since changing the Senate’s rules surrounding the confirmation process in September to break Senate Democrats’ blockade on advancing even the lowest-level positions throughout the Trump administration.

The GOP has gone nuclear for the fourth time in Senate history to lower the threshold for certain elections to just a simple majority rather than the typical 60-vote filibuster.

This change allowed Republicans to quickly advance in-cabinet positions and complete the historic moment Trump had been waiting for.

The candidates include former Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-Y), who will serve as inspector general of the Labor Department, and James Murphy and Scott Mayer, two picks for the National Labor Relations Board, as well as several others from nearly every federal agency.

Lawmakers also separately confirmed Trump’s pick to run the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), billionaire Jared Isaacman, and Douglas Weaver to sit on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Isaacman’s confirmation was on a bipartisan 67-30 vote but served as a second round for the upper chamber to reflect on his rise to the top of NASA.

Trump had previously nominated her to head the country’s space agency in December last year, but withdrew earlier this year after a “thorough review of prior relationships.”

But Isaacman was later re-nominated for the same post in November, and Trump praised her “passion for space, her astronaut experience, and her commitment to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new space economy.”
