Heartbreak for British figure skaters Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson as they blow chance to emulate Torvill and Dean at the Winter Olympics

Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson were the latest Team GB athletes to be heartbroken at this year’s Winter Olympics as they missed out on the ice dancing podium after a disappointing free dance.

The Team GB duo stood out in the rhythm dance, the first part of the competition, placing fourth with 85.47 points with their energetic routine to the Spice Girls medley.

But on Wednesday, the Scottish-themed program, which featured music from The Proclaimers’s and The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond, was riddled with errors and they finished ninth with 118.85 points.

This brought their total to 204.66, placing them in fourth place with three couples to dance.

While the couple lost their balance due to the early wind and waited for their points, they formed a particularly fearful and devastated figure in the ‘kissing and crying’ scene.

Freestyle skier Kirsty Muir and freestyle snowboarder Mia Brookes finished their events in fourth place on Monday, while Britain has had to battle a series of near misses in its quest for a medal so far.

Team GB’s mixed doubles curling team of Jennifer Dodd and Bruce Mouat found themselves in similar circumstances as they lost the bronze medal match against home favorites Italy on Tuesday.

Fear and Gibson are thought to be Britain’s best hopes for a figure skating medal since Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won bronze in Lillehammer 32 years ago.
