Israel Boosts Air Defenses With $8.7 Billion US-Backed Iron Dome Expansion | World News
Israel has signed a multibillion-dollar contract with defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to expand mass production of the Iron Dome missile defense system, the Ministry of Defense announced Thursday.
The funding comes from the US$8.7 billion US aid package approved by Congress in April 2024, with US$5.2 billion earmarked specifically for strengthening Israel’s air defense systems.
The Iron Dome system, developed in Israel and produced in cooperation with the US government, provides defense against short- and medium-range rocket and missile threats, as well as UAV threats. Throughout the last war, the system performed exceptionally well with remarkable interception rates, providing crucial protection to Israel’s home front against missile, rocket, UAV and cruise missile attacks. Featuring the latest technologies, Iron Dome is among the most advanced air defense systems in the world. Rafael is the chief contractor of the system.

Minister of Defense Israel Katz said, “The Iron Dome system has become one of the world’s best air defense systems in history. Over the years, and especially during recent military operations, the Iron Dome has protected our country’s skies and successfully thwarted thousands of threats from Gaza, Lebanon and other regions, serving as a protective shield for the citizens of Israel.” he said.
Emphasizing the US partnership in the research and development of Iron Dome, Katz added: “Together, we will continue to develop and improve the world’s most advanced air defense systems, ensuring the security of our state and Israel’s strategic superiority for decades to come.”
Iron Dome is the best-known system of Israel’s multi-layered air defense network. Romania became the first European buyer of the Israeli Iron Dome with a €2 billion (US$2.3 billion) deal signed in May.
Other layers include David’s Sling, designed to engage medium-range threats at high altitudes, and the C-Dome system, designed to protect naval assets from short-range threats. C-Dome made its first operational response in April 2024.
Designed to intercept ballistic missiles, the Arrow-3 system achieved its first operational success in November 2023 when it shot down a ballistic missile fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. This is believed to be the first time a missile has been intercepted in space, although Israeli officials have not confirmed it.
Israel also became the first country in May to deploy Iron Beam, a laser-based air defense system that intercepts multiple active enemy threats.
International demand for Israel’s military technology has increased as European countries increased their defense budgets in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Israel broke a new all-time record in defense exports with sales reaching 14.79 billion US dollars in 2024.
