Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, lauded the commissioning of home-made pollution control vessel Samudra Pratap, saying it strengthens the vision of self-sufficiency and reflects commitment to sustainability.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Pratap on Monday. This is the first of two indigenously built pollution control ships for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the largest ship in the fleet so far.

In a post on Prime Minister X, he stated that the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap is noteworthy for many reasons, adding that it “adds strength to our vision of self-reliance, strengthens our security apparatus and reflects commitment to sustainability, among others.”

The indigenous vessel was built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and is equipped with aviation facilities including advanced pollution detection systems, specialized pollution response boats, modern fire-fighting equipment and a helicopter hangar, providing greater operational reach even in harsh sea conditions.

While commissioning the ship, the Minister of Defense stated that these capabilities will enable rapid detection and control of pollution incidents.

Samudra Pratap will have two women officers on board, a notable first. Mr Singh praised this as a proud step towards a more inclusive and gender-neutral Coast Guard and highlighted the increasing role of women in front-line maritime operations.
