Iranian security chief Ali Larijani was killed in overnight airstrikes, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday.

Katz said in his statement that he was informed by the army that Larijani and Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Basij forces, were killed, according to Reuters.

Iran has not yet confirmed the news.

Larijani was considered the right-hand man of Iran’s late religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in attacks targeting senior Iranian officials at the beginning of the war on February 28.

Iran has since retaliated by attacking its Gulf neighbors and targeting ships attempting to pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Soleimani was leading the Basij forces, a key paramilitary force used to suppress protests in the Islamic Republic.

Office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in question In a social media post on Tuesday morning, it was stated that Netanyahu had ordered the elimination of senior officials of the Iranian regime.
