At the time of writing, it was around 6:30 a.m. in Israel, where air raid sirens were warning of incoming Iranian missiles.
A post by the Israeli Air Force on channel X stated that they were “working to intervene and strike wherever necessary to eliminate the threat.”
State media added that the 86-year-old was killed in an airstrike targeting a residential area in downtown Tehran. Satellite photos from Airbus showed the area was heavily bombed.
His death in office “showed that he constantly stood among the public and at the forefront of his responsibilities, confronting what the authorities called global arrogance,” state television said.
Iranian state media confirmed that Revolutionary Guard Commander Mohammed Pakpur and the Supreme Leader’s senior advisor Ali Shamkhani were also killed.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, described the act as a “great crime” and promised that those responsible will suffer the consequences, according to the statement made by his office.
The statement said, “This great crime will never remain unanswered and will open a new page in the history of the Islamic world and Shiism.”
Pezeshkian warned that Iran would respond “with all our strength and determination” and that the perpetrators and commanders of the attack would regret it.
