A three-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted and killed by a man known to her family. It was reported that the girl was buried in a shallow pit by the suspect, who lived in the same block with her family.

Police arrested a 24-year-old factory worker in Gurugram, southwest of New Delhi, India, on suspicion of sexually assaulting and killing the girl. Before an investigation was launched, she was reported missing by her family shortly before midnight on Friday, February 20.

Investigators later spotted the suspect on CCTV footage walking away with the girl. The man allegedly lured her away while she was playing near her home on Thursday evening.

He then allegedly attacked her and strangled her to death. The suspect reportedly took the three-year-old girl about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the site before burying her body.

Gurugram Police ASI spokesperson Sandeep Turan said: “He then strangled her, dug a shallow hole and fled after burying the body.” He added: “The suspect led the police team to the scene and helped them find the body, after which forensic experts were called to collect evidence.”

Local media reported that the suspect, who lived in the same block with the victim’s family and was known to him, confessed his crime during interrogation. This led to officers discovering the child’s body.

Forensic teams arrived at the scene to collect evidence. The local police force has promised a thorough investigation into the alleged kidnapping and murder.

Charges were filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder. There are also provisions in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act covering aggravated penetrative assault.
