‘It’s been extremely tough’: Heartbroken family speaks after body of Layla Jeffery was found days after she went missing

The heartbroken family of a 13-year-old girl, whose body was found in a forest in the Victoria region a few days after she disappeared, talked about their pain.

Layla Jeffery, 13, disappeared after being last seen on McCracken Street in Donald, about 270km northwest of Melbourne, on July 4.

Remains believed to be those of the missing teenager were found in woodland near Byrne Street on Thursday.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and two women in their 50s are assisting police with investigations.

No charges were made.

Layla’s aunt Kaitlyn Cheyne told the Herald Sun it had been a long and difficult week but at least they were relieved to find out what had happened to their very sweet and shy niece.

“It’s been extremely difficult,” he said.

“His mother’s condition was absolutely terrible, it was very difficult for her not to know.”

The Royal Blues News Football, Netball and Hockey Club says their small town is suffering.

In a statement, the club asked everyone to wear a touch of pink to honor the young girl and show love and support to Layla’s family and friends.

“On behalf of the Royal Blues, we extend our deepest condolences to Layla’s family, friends and everyone affected by this tragic loss,” the statement said.

“As a society, let’s stand together and support each other during this incredibly difficult time.

“Let us find strength in each other as we navigate the days ahead.”

A GoFundMe has raised more than $20,000 to support Layla’s family and help ease the financial burden of funeral expenses.

“Our Donald community is heartbroken by the tragic news surrounding Layla,” Peta Edmonds said.

“No family should have to face the loss of their child while also worrying about the costs of saying goodbye and moving forward with their lives.

“The kindness, compassion and support from our community has been extraordinary.

“Let’s continue to stand with Layla’s family and remind them that they are not facing this alone.”
