MPs would vote on using troops in Ukraine, Keir Starmer says

Sir Keir Starmer has promised MPs will vote on the deployment of British troops to oversee any peace deal in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister said the move would be consistent with “recent practice” in the use of the UK armed forces.

This comes after Britain and France reiterated their determination to deploy troops to deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again if a deal to end the conflict is reached.

While the government did not specify how many British troops might be sent, Sir Keir added that it would be “in line with our military plans”.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Sir Keir told MPs that in the event of a peace deal, British personnel would conduct “deterrence operations” and protect new “military centres” that allies plan to build in Ukraine.

Following the PMQs, Downing Street did not comment on whether a House of Commons vote could tie the government’s hands if MPs reject the government’s proposals.

On Tuesday, Britain and France signed a declaration of intent to deploy troops to Ukraine, and the two countries established “military centers” in the country.

The allies also largely agreed on security guarantees for Ukraine and proposed that the United States take the lead in monitoring the ceasefire.
